Getting around the city
Dubai has multiple transport options. Choose what suits your budget, comfort, and daily routine.
Dubai Metro
Fully air-conditioned and driverless. Clean, efficient, and safe. Two lines:
- Red Line: Covers main areas like Dubai Marina, Burj Khalifa, Mall of the Emirates, and DXB Airport.
- Green Line: Covers older areas like Deira and Al Qusais.
Trains run every 6–10 minutes during peak hours. Women and children-only cabins are available.
Dubai Tram
Runs in Dubai Marina and Jumeirah Beach Residences (JBR). Connects with the Metro at certain stations. Ideal for short trips near the beach or within the Marina.
Public Buses
Extensive network. Buses go where the metro doesn’t. Fully air-conditioned. Slower than the metro due to traffic. Use your Nol card to pay.
Nol Card (Transport Card)
A prepaid smart card used for metro, tram, bus, and public parking.
- Red Card: For tourists and occasional users.
- Silver Card: General use, tap-and-go.
- Blue Card: Registered to you, offers balance protection.
Buy and top up at metro stations or supermarkets like Carrefour.
Taxis
Reliable and metered. Can be hailed or booked through the RTA app.
Base fare: AED 12–15, higher from airports or late at night.
Tip: Cash or card both accepted, but always confirm before the trip.
Uber and Careem
App-based ride services. Slightly more expensive than regular taxis but more comfortable. You can choose vehicle type. Good for airport transfers and night-time trips.
Water Transport
For crossing Dubai Creek or getting around Business Bay or Marina.
- Abras: Traditional wooden boats. AED 1 per trip.
- Water Buses: Operate in Dubai Marina.
- Water Taxis: More expensive, book in advance. Good for private groups or scenic travel.
Bike Rentals and Cycling
Dubai has improved bike infrastructure. Good for short trips and leisure rides.
- Careem Bikes and Byky: Rentable via app.
- Main areas: Jumeirah, Downtown, Al Qudra.
- Tip: Not ideal in summer heat; best in early morning or winter.

Monthly cost: AED 1,200–2,500 depending on vehicle.
